Mackinac Island, Michigan

Yesterday we decided to take the ferry over to Mackinac Island.  We loaded Monet up in her stroller and set sail.  In case you don't know, no motorized vehicles are allowed on the island.  You can take your bicycle, rent a bicycle, take a horse drawn taxi or just walk around.  We needed the exercise and since we had the dog stroller, it made it a good choice.  We found out that the lakes freeze over in the winter and the only way for the winter residents to get supplies is for them to be brought over across the ice by snow mobile.  Most of the employees for the shops and restaurants do not live on the island and come from all over for seasonal work.  We met several from Florida.  Two items are readily available in the many shops......that is fudge and t shirts.  The island has a quaint old look and most of the structures are Victorian and there's no modern architecture.  One of the biggest draws is that there are no motorized vehicles so as to cause pollution and foul smells.  However, they don't advertise that there is a constant smell of horse poop!  There are 15 to 20 people who are employed and constantly scooping up the poop almost as soon as it hits the pavement.  We wondered why that they don't do it like Savannah does where the horses where the poop bags while they walk.  We must admit, the flowers and landscaping on the island were magnificent.  It made you want to live there, weather and all.  In fact, we heard several teenagers tell their parents "one day I'm going to live here."

Tomorrow we plan to get up and head towards Traverse City for a week and will shoot out in the car for sightseeing.  We have a couple from our neighborhood that have a home there and will try to contact them.  We understand they have redone a hundred year old home.

Talk to you soon.
